Gennady Gefter graduated from the Kharkov Institute of the Arts in 1974.
He completed his post-graduate studies at the Leningrad State
Conservatory, where he polished his conducting skills with Ilya Musin.
After having performed with various symphony orchestras in the former
USSR, he taught flute technique and conducting between 1978 and 1989
at the Zaporoshye State Musical College. Many of his students have
gone on to study at prestigious music schools in Europe and the US.
Two of them currently play flute in the Berlin Philharmonic and
Philadelphia Orchestras. Others are teaching at the collegiate
and post-graduate level.In 1990, he and his family emigrated to Toronto, where he joined the North York Board of Education. In 1997, he began teaching at Claude Watson, where he served as the Symphonic Band Director in its arts program. In addition to conducting the Festival Wind Orchestra, he currently teaches at Earl Haig Secondary School and directs the "Flautandia" flute choir. His wife, Jenya, teaches piano. Their son Igor is a member of the cello section of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. |
